BCMS Family Update Week of 10/14/19 - 10/18/19

Battle Creek Middle School Families, below are this week's announcements:

Our fall sports season has come to a close, with our first football, cross country, golf, girls’ soccer, and volleyball teams, along with our football cheer squad. Winter sports are ramping up with our first swim team, wrestling team, girls and boys JV and varsity basketball teams, 5th grade basketball club, and basketball cheer squad. Our pep band continues to practice in preparation for some key home basketball games, the dance team is putting together some routines, and our glee club knocked it out of the park with their Disney performances and are getting ready to launch into their holiday season—and new members are encouraged to participate. We have more than a dozen clubs in which students from all grade levels can participate, and you can find more information about who the sponsors are, when and where they meet, and any other pertinent information you need, posted on our website: http://battlecreekmiddlemauryk12.ss9.sharpschool.com/News/what_s_new/clubs_and_sports. For parents whose children have yet to plug in to at least one sport or club, please consider encouraging them to do so.

We have also included on our home page links to the announcement slideshow that rotates throughout the screens in our school so family and community members can see what our students see (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1GVzNIVemmJ-ZXllOssqFyxW7ys_-GXagi0yuvbW35Ks/edit), along with a link to the YouTube channel that includes our daily morning announcement broadcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NWLjYPwJ2M&list=UU0_CZ-VhKy2AZoJE341JFtA. I encourage you to check those out regularly.

This week is National School Lunch Week. I have worked with adolescents for more than three decades now, and I can tell you that our cafeteria serves the best food of any school where I’ve worked. Some of our students say they don’t like school food based on their experiences at previous schools but haven’t even given it a try here at BCMS. So I’d like to add a little incentive to give it a shot this week. Every time student eat a school breakfast or lunch this week, they will be given a ticket that can be submitted for prize drawings at the end of the week. Those who eat lunch every day will get double their number of tickets, and those who eat both breakfast and lunch at school every day this week will get triple their number of tickets, significantly increasing their odds of winning.

Speaking of school lunches, you might be surprised at how many families qualify for free or reduced price school meals. Any time situations change—like a house fire or other disaster, divorce or death of a parent, loss of job (or even a temporary job loss, such as a strike)—families often become eligible for these services. Forms are available in the school office; you may come by, or give us a call and we will send home one with your child.

This week in our ACT Character Strong lessons, students will learn about how improving habits takes practice. The character dare “Leave it Better” teaches a valuable lesson in kindness as students clean up trash around the school or their neighborhood. Our family dare, “Walking Trash Pick-up,” lines up with our student dare and may be combined to include the whole family. In this dare you are encouraged to go for a walk in your neighborhood or at a local park as a family and pick up any trash you see along the way.

Go Bears!
